Atlanta Web Design: Custom Wireless Application Development

Atlanta, GA and Newark, CA (January 31, 2006) – Objectware, Inc., an Atlanta headquartered web design and wireless development company, and Socket Communications, Inc. an innovative provider of mobile productivity products, today announced the implementation by Crosslink Orthopaedics of a custom Web application built by Objectware in conjunction with Socket’s SDIO Scan Card to effectively manage its complicated inventory process. Crosslink is using Palm Treo Smartphones with plug-in bar code scanning technology to increase the speed and efficiency of its inventory tracking system while reducing the potential for errors.

Crosslink Orthopaedics, an agency of Stryker Orthopaedics, one of the world’s largest medical device companies, provides kits for doctors performing joint replacement surgeries. Crosslink often finds itself in complicated situations in which doctors will use, on average, four parts of a kit that contains anywhere from 50 to 100 pieces, returning the rest after the surgery is complete. Crosslink selected the combined solution from Socket and Objectware to provide its sales force and technicians with real-time inventory control to keep track of complete kits on hand as well as the location of parts in the order fulfillment and return process.

“We previously used an unwieldy tracking system that comprised pen-and-paper, faxes, telephone calls and databases that weren’t integrated with each other,” said Joe Carlson, operations manager for Crosslink Orthopaedics. “With an average of 70 cases a day, we had tremendous difficulty keeping track of all the moving parts. There were few options that could handle everything we wanted on an integrated device. The ability to do this and have it all be through a cell phone is the icing on the cake.”

The software runs on a Web Server allowing PCs equipped with Web Browsers to access the data from anywhere. Similarly, field employees, equipped with Palm Treo smartphones and Socket Communications’ SocketScan SDIO Scan Card, can access and update valuable data via a wireless connection. Employees scan the items in the kits as they are returned. The warehouse staff then makes sure they have as many complete surgery kits on hand as possible.

“Previously at Crosslink, the same information was written down three to five times and it took 20-30 minutes to process each kit, increasing the likelihood of errors and raising costs,” said Chris Ragan, director of sales & marketing at Objectware. “The new system, in which an average of three kits can be handled in the length of time it took to process one, gave the warehouse staff a 33 percent boost in productivity.”

By employing the Treo, 50 sales representatives and their managers are now able to handle surgery scheduling and kit usage from anywhere. Objectware developed the software to work well even when wireless connection is unavailable. By keeping a local cache of the latest synched data on the device, employees are able to do their work and the data is automatically synced as soon as connection becomes available again.

The Socket SDIO Scan Card records the items that are used during a surgery. The Treo is able to capture signatures, which is important when the hospital staff is ready to approve an order. Good Technology’s GoodLink pushes e-mail to the field staff, to ensure they are aware when a new message arrives, and manages data security, ensuring sensitive personal information is secure.

“Crosslink’s employees have reported great success implementing the combined solution to streamline the communication of complex inventory data throughout its organization,” said Peter Phillips, vice president of marketing at Socket Communications. “As a result, Crosslink has been able to handle this year’s double-digit percentage increase in sales without adding operations staff.”

Objectware also designed the software to communicate with Crosslink’s customer service billing department, supplying details about the parts used for each case, down to the catalog and lot code level. Surgery cases are thus reconciled in real-time, without the need for phone calls and faxes, and implants used are immediately reordered for overnight delivery. The next morning, warehouse employees receive the parts and match them with incomplete kits, enabling the company to send out new orders faster.
